Expanding the Potential of Large-scale Cohort Studies Through UK-Japan Collaboration

Information

UK and Japan share a common goal in utilising large-scale cohort studies to understand the genetic, lifestyle and environmental causes of disease to improve the health of society. The recent evolution and cost reduction of complex sample assays, such as genome and other -omic measures, as well as the progress of large-scale data analysis methods, have greatly expanded the opportunities provided by these resources.

UK Biobank is an intensively characterised prospective cohort of 500,000 UK participants, with ongoing data collection and linkage to electronic health records. Accessible to approved researchers anywhere in the world, its large-scale biomedical database contains in-depth genetic and health information including exome, genome, metabolome and (soon) proteome data. Tohoku Medical Megabank Organisation is a large-scale biobank for the general public that represents Japan and Asia, consisting of bio-specimen and information on cohort studies, genome information, and metabolome information from 150,000 participants.

Cooperation between large-scale cohort studies established in each region of the world is expected to further expand the benefits for society. With this view, this symposium is intended to introduce the characteristics of these resources in Japan and the UK, and to discuss opportunities and benefits for future collaboration.
