Spintronics: from Mathematics to Devices

Program Theme

Since Pauli and Dirac we know that the electron comes in 4 flavors, which in the non-relativistic limit reduce to 2 components of the intrinsic angular momentum, the “up” and “down” spin. Although we rarely experience the electron spin in everyday life, it governs the very structure of matter and lies at the root of phenomena such as ferromagnetism, the state in which spins are ordered and generate a macroscopic magnetic moment, or superconductivity. Understanding many-body systems is made difficult by the existence of spin, affecting most fundamental concepts such as symmetry and topology. Even after decades of research new spin-related discoveries are regularly being made, such as a new class of materials called topological insulators and Weyl semimetals.
Spintronics is the science and technology aiming to understand and control the electron spin in nanoscale structures and devices and apply the newly found functionalities to sensor, information, and communication technologies. The full spectrum of spintronics spans many disciplines, from pure mathematics, over theoretical physics and materials science, to the design of integrated circuits and nanomedical therapies.
Presently, no forum exists in which all facets of the research on spintronics are comprehensively being addressed. The Tohoku Forum for Creativity on Spintronics will fill this vacuum by a concerted action of researchers from different faculties and research institutes of Tohoku University under leadership of the WPI AIMR and the Top-Global Graduate School of Spintronics, while the contributing entities are the Faculties of Science and Engineering, as well as the IMR, CIES and RIEC Institutes.
Tohoku University is the right place for this endeavor since a large community of junior and senior researchers studies all aspects of spintronics.
The Forum discussions will be guided by leading scientists, who expound their newest results and visions on the field in intensive lectures or short courses. Several workshops will focus on selected research topics. In parallel, pedagogical lectures will prepare students and postdocs as well as non-specialist senior scientists to better understand the background of burning issues.
