Discovery Event for Aspiring Female Scientists

A discovery event for aspiring female scientists was held at the TOKYO ELECTRON House of Creativity on October 15 – 16, 2016. This event was aimed at first and second year female high school students who are interested in enrollment at Tohoku University and wish to become scientists.

This event consisted of lectures by leading female scientists and group discussions with other participants facilitated by female graduate students from Tohoku University. The participants learned about cutting edge science being carried out by female scientists, and had a valuable opportunity to talk with other female students from across Japan. In addition, on the second day the participants went on a field trip to the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. This gave the students the opportunity to think deeply about natural disasters, and to directly experience the recovery from the earthquake's damage.

Through this event, we would like female high school students to feel familiar with cutting edge science and to clearly see the valuable contribution that female scientists can make to society. Thus, by holding this event, we aim to develop female leaders who can create an affluent society for future next generations.
