Decommissioning Workshop 1: Statuses of Nuclear Decommissioning in Japan and in US – Knowing the Differences

Information

Purpose of the Workshop Series and Workshop #1

The workshop series intends to cover Risk Management in nuclear decommissioning where risk is considered to include technical risks in completing projects in a safer and timely manner. Another purpose of the workshops is to share US's experiences in the past decommissioning projects including the technical issues and other subjects such as regulatory processes, financial structures, and communicating progress with the local community.

Workshop #1 in August 2023 will focus on technical topics. The purposes of the Workshop#1 is to exchange statuses of Japan's and US's decommissioning commercial reactors and to develop questions for future dialogue concerning the safer and more efficient decommissioning of nuclear facilities. This will occur through the exchange of views among industry, government agencies, and regulatory bodies of both Japan and U.S.

Scope of the workshop series and items to be covered and not to be covered

The scope of the workshop series will be limited to decommissioning operations at the power plant sites and will not include topics such as the selection of a disposal site. Decommissioning of a post–accident reactor will not be directly covered.
