Japan – U.S. Decommissioning Workshop Series
Workshop 2: Nuclear Facility Decommissioning Risk Reduction
The Value in Radioactive Waste Treatment

Information

The goal of the Japan–U.S. Decommissioning Workshop Series is to discuss risk management in nuclear decommissioning, specifically risks in completing projects in a safe and timely manner. Sharing lessons learned in reducing technical risk is a primary objective of the series. An additional goal of the workshop series is to share the US's experiences in the past decommissioning projects including the technical issues and other subjects such as regulatory processes, financial structures, and communicating progress with the local community.

The scope of the workshop series will be limited to decommissioning operations at the power plant sites and will not include topics such as the selection of a disposal site. Decommissioning of a post–accident reactor will not be directly covered.

In Workshop 1, which was held in August 2023, participants from the nuclear administration, industry, and regulatory agencies in the U.S. and Japan introduced their current awareness of and concerns about decommissioning of commercial reactors, and exchanged opinions to consider the direction of future discussions.

In Workshop 2, to be held in February, 2024, participants from Japanese and U.S. industry, regulatory agencies and universities will discuss the handling of low–level radioactive waste generated during the decommissioning process and how improved low–level radioactive waste management can reduce risk during the decommissioning process. We hope this will be an opportunity to discover “hints and insights” for safer and smoother decommissioning from each participant's point of view.
