Design Lab for our Future Co–existence

International Symposium on Design for the Sustainable Society via Digital Technology –Developing Digital Human Resources for the Sustainable Society

Information

Digital technology is rapidly progressing as a platform for building a global society, making it essential to live a life that utilizes digital technology, and in line with this, the cycle of improving the convenience of digital technology is progressing. For this reason, developing digital human resources has become an urgent issue. In this symposium, we will discuss the future prospects of digital technology and what kind of human resources will be needed in society in the future.

Abstract

Who will lead tomorrow's society?
Yuko Harayama (Tohoku University)

The penetration of digital technology into society continues to accelerate, due in part to the rise of generative AI. It not only improves productivity and makes life easier, but also induce changes in social systems. The “human resources devoted to digital technology”, driving this trend, are expected to, not only take on technological challenges, but also take actions considering their impact on society. In other words, the perspective of “leading tomorrow's society” is essential for those who are engaged in the development of digital technology, and I would like to raise this issue at this symposium with the theme of “Developing human resources devoted to digital technology”.

Initiatives for DX (Digital Transformation) Promotion and Digital Human Resource Development
Kentaro Shibata (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry)

Currently, momentum for DX promotion is growing in society as a whole, but the DX field is facing various challenges such as a shortage of digital human resources. In this presentation, we will overview the current status of DX promotion and digital human resources in Japan, and introduce policies to promote DX in Japan as a whole.

Tokyo Electron's efforts to develop digital human resources and contribute to a sustainable society
Tetsuya Toda (Tokyo Electron Ltd)

In a society where digital technology has become indispensable, the semiconductor industry and Tokyo Electron are playing an increasingly important role. At the same time, society and businesses are facing challenges that have become more sophisticated and complex than ever before. In this lecture, we will explain Tokyo Electron's digital (DX) initiatives, the development of digital human resources, and issues and responses in such an environment.

Ambient computing to support and nurture people
Kazuhiro Sasao (NS Solutions Corporation)

The development of digital technology has made it possible to assist people everywhere. We will discuss an overview and case studies of ambient computing, a technology that assists people by combining omnipresent sensors and AI

The forefront of digital technology: the current state of generative AI and talent development
Akihide Okamoto (Givery)

In this lecture, we will focus on the theme of “The Cutting Edge of Digital Technology: The Current State of Generative AI and Talent Development”, highlighting the latest trends in the generative AI market and the talent required for its application. We will provide a deep insight into the market situation of generative AI, effective ways to incorporate it into daily operations, and above all, a detailed explanation of the impact of generative AI on talent development. This lecture offers educators interested in the forefront of technology an opportunity to gain the latest knowledge and practical learning, providing a new perspective on future talent development and education.

Efforts to Develop Data Science Human Resources at Shiga University
Yo Sheena (Shiga University)

Shiga University was the first university in Japan to create a faculty named “Data Science” in 2017. Faculty of Data Science has just produced its third cohort of students in March 2023 for both undergraduate and master's degrees. I would like to report briefly on the human resource development at the undergraduate and graduate schools over the past seven years.

Initiatives for Future Fables project
Yasunori Yamanouchi (Tohoku University)

The Future Society Design Lab is currently promoting the Future Fables project. In this project, we are planning to create a fable set in the future through dialogue, and at the same time, to hold a dialogue about the future based on the fable created in the project. The report will include demonstrations, outlining its purpose, methods, and future prospects.
