Information

It is also becoming clear that many of the “wicked problems” of our 21st century society, such as climate change and economic inequality, will not be solved by technological advances alone. This is because there is a complex interplay of social, environmental, political, and economic factors at work across different sectors and domains, creating different local and cultural challenges that are unique to each place and culture. Under these circumstances, it is no less important to have an interdisciplinary vision or worldview of “what kind of society we should strive for,” than it is to know how to fix the existing problems with technology.

This program adopted a new approach called “transition design” to practically study the process and possibilities of vision design, and members of four companies jointly created a worldview of a desirable future society around 2050, setting their own unique themes. This co–creation also took place in active interaction with Tohoku University faculty, staff, and students from various disciplines of science, technology, and the humanities.

What we have been doing this year will culminate in this event. We will share the worldviews conceived by members of the companies and Tohoku University, and thus the process of envisioning “worldview transition” that will usher us from the past and present to the future, to discuss with participants the ideal visions of society as well as the possibility of their social and industrial implementation.
