Future Society Design Program

Tohoku Transition to Future

Program Theme

This program aims to co–create a citizens–centered vision of a desirable future society around 2050 based on the Transition Design approach, a transdisciplinary approach aimed at addressing the many ‘wicked’ problems confronting 21st–century societies, such as climate change and economic disparity. It is becoming clear that solving wicked problems through only technological advancements is challenging because they are interconnected and always manifest in place and culture–specific ways. Under these circumstances, Tohoku University and participant companies will collaboratively develop a “north–star” vision for our society rather than technology. This effort encourages everyone to make a shared understanding of our desirable future and change their behaviors and socio–economic systems toward it.
